Decorative object - Bookends, ca. 1930s
... William Stebbins Barnard... bookend was placed by William Stebbins Barnard in 1877. ... bookend was placed by William Stebbins Barnard in 1877. Bookends ...The pair of ornamental white resin owl bookends was likely made around the 1930s when epoxy resin became available. Bookends modelled on owls have been a popular ornament for many years, possibly because of the association between owls, books and wisdom. They are used and displayed in places where books are appreciated and valued, such as homes, libraries, educational buildings, business offices, legal institutions and banks. Bookends hold a row of upright books in place by supporting the beginning and end of the row. The books are more likely to keep their integrity when stored vertically. The first patent for a metal bookend was placed by William Stebbins Barnard in 1877. Bookends became useful and decorative items around the middle of the sixteenth century after printed books became available. At that time books were expensive and treasured possessions, treated with much respect. Even in the early nineteenth century, a Bible was often the only book in the home. It was included among the limited items brought by many immigrants to Australia. Books became more available and affordable to the public by the end of the nineteenth century and households and businesses were able to build their own libraries. Bookends were used then, and are still used now, to keep books organised, cared for, and readily accessible. Bookends, a pair of two (2) small white resin owls with clear bright red eyes standing on a stack of books, their bodies facing towards each other, chests on an upright book, heads turned towards the viewer. ... Barnard, William Edwin and Henry Clifford (the husband... four children: Lilian Mavis, Orlando George Barnard, William ...Henry Christian (c.1809-91) was one of the first settlers in Kew. He arrived in Victoria with his wife Agnes and son Orlando in 1855 on the Gypsy Queen. He established a rope-making business in Bulleen Road by 1858 but was declared insolvent two years later. In his final years, he was celebrated as one of the oldest living settlers of the district. His son, Orlando Henry Beater Christian (c.1853-1930) became a member of the Hawthorn Band and a foundation member of the Willsmere Swimming Club. Orlando and his wife Elizabeth had four children: Henry Beater (1886-1962), Ada Susannah May (1888-1962), Orlando Julius (1891-1917) and Lilian Adelaide ( -1956). Ada married George Herrick Washfold, and had four children: Lilian Mavis, Orlando George Barnard, William Edwin and Henry Clifford (the husband of the donor). An item from an outstanding and diverse photographic collection, assembled by members of the Christian family of Pakington Street, Kew, comprising professional and amateur photography, depicting individuals, natural and settled environments and the interactions between these worlds. Many of the photographs vividly capture the worlds of three generations of men - Henry Christian, his son Orlando Henry Beater Christian, and his grandson of Henry Christian. The most important photographer was the youngest, Henry Christian, who was a keen explorer, not just of his immediate environment but also of the Victorian wilderness. His major opus is contained in two albums in which he records, sometimes in majestic detail and on other occasions the intimate features of the natural world. His photographic travels during the 1920s, often in solitary ramblings but on other occasions with companions, recall the heroic landscape photography of an earlier era, pioneered by Nicholas Caire. In addition to their aesthetic value, the albums are historically significant records within the State of Victoria, of what is now a distant point in time, and of places that have become radically altered through human intervention. Photographic positive on mounting board. The image depicts a woman and three young children in a buggy drawn by a donkey. The road on which they pause is surrounded by fenced and cleared farmland, stretching away to the distant hills. It is presumed that the subject of the photo is Elizabeth Christian (nee Schoberg) and three of her four children. The photographer may have been her husband, Orlando Henry Beater Christian.christian family, washfold family, kew pioneers, christian-washfold collection -

... FGA Barnard and William Derrick is of high local significance ...Various PartiesReference, Research, InformationKHS OrderMembers of the Barnard Family were significant and notable pioneers of Kew. Francis Barnard established the first Kew Post Office and also a pharmacy. The post office was on the corner of Cotham Road and High Street. It later moved to another location in High Street. His son, F G A Barnard wrote the ‘Jubilee History of Kew, Victoria’ (1910). [An index to the publication is in the file]. Both Barnards were mayors of Kew. The extensive file of information includes some primary sources and a number of photocopies of secondary sources. The primary sources include two letters, the first from F G A Barnard dated 29-9-10, to W Derrick Esq, Cambooya requesting information on early settlement in Kew, and a handwritten reply from W Derrick recalling this period. Another primary source [laminated] relates to The Intermediate Examination conducted by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria (1917). The Kew Historical Society has many items relating to the Barnard family in its collection. One is the wall clock, which was donated by a Mrs McArthur of North Balwyn in 1973. The correspondence relating to its acquisition, and an article written by Mavis Rolley is in the file. While the collection includes an original copy of ‘Bear and Forbear: A genealogical study of the Prentice, Barnard and related families in Great Britain, Ireland and Australia’ (Prentice, Sydney & Mildred, 1985) in its library, a photocopy of parts are included in the file, with a number of letters from Mildred Prentice. The Society also has a number of bottles etc., from the pharmacy, which were donated by Kathleen Murphy of Surrey Hills. Various partiesReference, Research, InformationSecondary Values (KHS Imposed Order)Correspondence and newspaper articles/clippings relating to historic gardens in Kew. The oldest item is a letter from the National Trust Victoria announcing their two-year garden study and seeking information on gardens in Kew. Mavis Rolley, Secretary of the Society, made handwritten notes in response, which are kept in the file. She refers to: the pear trees planted by William Oswin in c. 1845 near what is now the Burke Road Bridge (she notes that a search for the trees at the time of the construction of the Eastern Freeway was unsuccessful), a camellia planted by the Dannocks near the corner of Derby and High Street, a c.1876 pine tree in Field Place, Henty Court, an 1875 Moreton Bay fig at Tarring, Ruyton, a Moreton Bay fig at Roxeth, Trinity Grammar, an 1840s oak tree and a 120-year old olive tree at Fairholme, Barry Street, 1870 pine trees at D’Estaville, Barry Street, trees at Turinville, Barnard Grove, dating to 1846, pine trees dating from 1845-6 on the Willsmere Farm, red gums in Victoria Park, pine trees in the Cemetery dating from the 1860s, trees in the Alexandra Gardens and at Kew Primary School, palm trees at La Verna, Sackville Street dating from the 1890s, the trees and gardens at Ross House (Charleville), and the trees at Merridale, Sackville Street which date from the 1880s, a magnolia at Lalla Rookh. These dates are probably highly contestable. Other handwritten notes from 1979 about significant gardens included: 5 Molesworth Street, Red Bluff - Redmond Street (garden now destroyed), Campion House, Studley Park Road, Raheen, Studley Park Road, Ross House, Cotham Road (Charleville), 7 Adeney Avenue, 20-21 Belmont Avenue, 52 Mary Street, an Edna Walling garden on the corner of Argyle Road and Victor Avenue, Merridale, Sackville Street, Roseneath, and Reno, St John’s Parade.gardens - private - kew (vic), garden design - kew (vic), kew horticultural societygardens - private - kew (vic), garden design - kew (vic), kew horticultural society -

Certificate, Tribute to Mr W. H. Richardson from Members of the Star of Kew Juvenile Tent, 1887
Historical information - RECHABITES - The Star of Kew Tent, No. 260. This branch of the Independent Order of Rechabites was founded in September, 1882, when the following members were installed as the first officers by the district officers, viz. Chief Ruler, Bro. W. H. Bardwell; Deputy Ruler, Bro. C. Viney; Past Chief Ruler, Bro. J. V. Morgan; Treasurer, Bro. R. Eyre; Money Steward, Bro. A. Brown; Levite, Bro. W. H. Richardson; Guardian, Bro. J. Wathen; Secretary, Bro. T. J. Eaton. Bros. W. H. Bardwell, T. J. Eaton, and F. J. Legge were appointed as trustees. It is interesting to note that three of the foundation members, Messrs. Bardwell, Eaton, and Richardson, and still members of the tent. The first meetings were held in the Mission Hall, but for many years the meeting place of the tent has been the Kew Town Hall. The funds of the tent have gradually accumulated until at the last audit they amounted to £2,097. For many years past the interest on the funds has been more than sufficient to meet all claims for sick pay. The total membership is now 140. The following past secretaries have been mainly instrumental in placing the tent in its present position:-Bros. T. J. Eaton, W. H. Bardwell, C. B. Gray, and C. L. Churcher. The present officers are :- C.R., Bro. R. M. Jones; D.R., Bro. T. H. B. Williams; P.C.R., Bro. C. H. Green; Treasurer, Bro. W. J. Thornton; Secretary, Bro. F. C. W. Hurrell. Junior Branch. A junior branch was founded in 1883, and while its membership has fluctuated considerably according to the enthusiasm of the management, it has been the means of introducing many members to the senior tent. Its membership is now 41. Female Branch. Lily of Kew Tent, No. 20. This branch was formed in October, 1904, and has accomplished good work. Its membership is 38. Much of its success is due to the untiring energy of its secretary, Mrs. J Jaycock. Source: Barnard, FGA, Jubilee History of Kew, Victoria, 1910This document forms part of a large collection of material assembled by the Rogers family of Kew and donated by the family to the Kew Historical Society by Dorothy Rogers or by her sons. Photograph, Sandhill Forge, Cotham Road, c.1900
While a later inscription suggests that the photo dates from 1908, by that stage, according to the Sands & McDougall Directories, the forge on the corner of Cotham and Mont Victor Roads had been taken over by H. Wright. F.G.A. Barnard in his Jubilee History of Kew (1910) records that the well known Sandhill Nursery, had been established by William Holt early in the 1850s. Presumably this was an earlier business as by 1888 it is recorded that the business had become a forge. The forge stood on what is now part of the grounds of Genazzano Convent. A rare photograph of a pioneering industrial business in Kew on the site now occupied by Genazzano Convent. The photo shows W. Holt, Wheelwright, Veterinary and General - Blacksmith, Cotham Road, Kew.
